ROOKIE BANGERS
CAR CONSTRUCTION RULES AND REGULATIONS

INTRODUCTION
This formula is especially designed to encourage new drivers to Stadium Racing and to
enjoy the atmosphere and excitement of driving without a large financial investment, or
for drivers who feel they cannot give the commitment required to compete at a very high
level in the other various formulas available. Drivers who have achieved high success in
any other senior type formula over the past give years cannot compete in the Rookie Banger
formula.
TYPE OF RACING
Rookie Bangers is intended to be a LIMITED CONTACT formula only. Cars will compete for the
FIRST THREE LAPS of every race with NO CONTACT, the UNION FLAG will then be displayed
after which LIGHT CONTACT ONLY will be permitted. This means that you can push a car from
behind, spin a car to the inside of the track, but you MUST NOT follow a car into the
safety fence, or lean or spin a car into the safety fence.
WHAT YOU NEED TO GO RACING
¨ A crash helmet which should be a minimum specification of BS6658-85
Type A, BS6658 Type A/FR, Snell SA90 or Snell SA95.
¨ A pair of brightly coloured FIRE RETARDANT overalls.
¨ 4 point safety harness (minimum).
¨ A fire extinguisher 1Kg (2lbs) dry powder or gas with a level
indicator dial.
¨ Good seat with head restraint.
¨ Fuel Shut off tap and either a length of good quality rubber or metal
covered fuel pipe.
¨ Battery isolator switch, fitted within easy reach of the driver.
¨ A length of iron for supporting the Drivers seat.
¨ A fuel tank with fuel outlet from the top of the tank with a secure
SCREW ON METAL CAP with a breather pipe which if inverted will prevent spillage.
WHICH CAR(s)
Any Saloon/Hatchback or Estate car of 1600cc and under, front or rear wheel drive. No
Granadas, Toyota Starlets, Cortinas, are allowed, and from 1st June 2001, Ford Capris will
not be allowed.
PREPARATION
Remove all exterior mouldings/headlamps/door handles exterior mirrors, tow bars and wheel
weights.
Remove all glass, interior trim, head lining, floor covering.
It is strongly recommended that ALL obsolete wiring be removed.
Remove old fuel tank.
Remove spare wheel carriers.
Do NOT FILL IN headlamp or rear lamp apertures.
Dashboards may stay but their removal is recommended.
Front and rear bumpers may be removed. ALL PLASTIC front and rear bumpers MUST BE removed.
BODYWORK
Front wings may be trimmed below the front bumper level. DOORS must either be welded
(spot), bolted, chained or roped. A DOOR PLATE MUST BE FITTED and should overlap the
drivers door front and rear pillar by a minimum of 3" maximum 6". It should be
made of steel plate 3/8" - ½" thick, and be a minimum of 10" wide, maximum
12" wide. It should be attached to the car with a minimum of 4 x 3.4" bolts,
maximum 8 x ¾" bolts with large washers on the inside with at least one bolt on each
of the door pillars.
No additional welding is permitted.
Bonnet may be removable but must be securely fixed front and back with bonnet locking pins
of some form (No large Banger bolts).
Grills may be removed but it is preferable if they are left as manufactured.
PAINTWORK
Drivers should NOT paint their cars in team colours OR IN SIMILAR COLOURS TO THAT OF OTHER
CARS. Refusal to comply with this regulation in full will result in all cars which in the
opinion of the scrutineer/steward are similar in appearance being withdrawn from the
meeting. BRIGHT colours are recommended, a good general appearance is required before any
car will be allowed to race. Cars can be neatly sign written, but nothing should be
painted or sign written on the car which could cause offence.
MIRRORS
An internal mirror only may be fitted.
ENGINES
Air filters may be removed. Everything must remain as manufactured. Gearbox must be as
manufactured, axle and ratio must be as manufactured. NO locked diffs or limited slip
diffs.
SEAT BELTS
A full safety harness MUST BE fitted and MUST be anchored on at least three separate
anchor points.
BRAKES
Brakes MUST remain as manufactured and working on all four wheels.
WHEELS & TYRES
Any standard road wheel maybe used up to 6.5"J that fits safely. All four wheels MUST
be of the same type and diameter and wheel nuts must be fitted. Hub cam and wheel weights
MUST be removed. Only conventional standard road tyres may be used upto 195.
BATTERY
The battery MUST be securely fixed and MUST be fitted inside the car on, under or behind
the roll bar BUT NOT in the footwell.
Batteries CANNOT be left under the bonnet. It must be securely fixed, bolted down and
covered with a leak proof material to prevent spillage of acid.
All wiring MUST be insulated and an electrical cut out switch MUST be fitted.
Electric starters must be fitted and in full working order.
RADIATORS
Radiators are free but MUST NOT be moved from their original position.
DRIVERS SEAT
A seat with head restraint MUST be fitted. It should be securely mounted at shoulder
height to the cross bar or to the rollover bar and bolted securely to the floor.
ROLL BAR
A roll bar MUST be fitted consisting of not less than a single loop with at least one
additional cross bar behind the seat at shoulder level. This is in support of door
pillars, securely bolt bolted to the roof and floor with a minimum sized bolt of 5/16th
and suitable washers. Maximum size of roll bar is 3" box or round tube. Minimum size
1.5" box or tube. A cross bar bolted or welded between the drivers door pillar and
the passenger door pillar at shoulder height to support drivers seat which must be
securely fixed to this bar, plus behind the drivers seat and securely fixed behind the
cross bar should be a minimum of a single upright 'acro type' roof support (1.5" x
1.5" minimum) securely fitted to the floor and roof by 4" plates. Cross bar and
upright should be used together. No scaffolding clamps allowed, adjustable feet must be
welded to the floor. It is recommended that the roll bar(s) be padded.
IMPORTANT
When referring to all engine/car construction specifications the principle will always be
that unless specific permission is made within these rules, nothing may be altered or
changed in any way to the Standard parts. IF IT DOES NOT SAY, YOU CANNOT DO. IT
FLAG/SIGNALS/COLOUR LIGHT SIGNALS
Red Flag/Red Lights STOP RACING IMMEDIATELY
Green Flag/Green Lights All clear to commence racing
Waved Yellow Flag/Flashing Yellow Lights Slow down to walking pace at
once. You must not overtake the car in front, keep in single file astern and remain in
position until either green or red flag is shown.
Steady Yellow Flag Continue racing but watch out for obstruction on
track.
Union Flag Light contact permissible from this point in the race or half
distance covered.
White Flag/Black Cross You may have committed an infringement, continue
racing.
Black Flag Disqualification. Retire immediately from racing.
Chequered Flag Race winner declared, but keep racing until Red Flag is
shown.
GENERAL RULES
Drivers are requested to take all wheels/tyres away with them after every meeting. Failure
to do so will result in an increase in race fees to cover removal, which cost the stadium
several hundred pounds in 2 years for the removal.
Rookie Banger Drivers may also take part in Metro-Fiesta, 2CV Reliant Robin and small Van
Banger event is subject to confirmation. Cars MUST be prepared to the specifications as
listed for the respective classes in this rule book.
Regular re-grading will take place during the season and your designated roof colour i.e
White, Yellow, Blue, Red MUST be painted on the whole roof of your car.
All race winners during a meeting will subsequently start at the rear of their respective
grades for all remaining races of that meeting. Drivers will be expected to carry out this
rule without further notification and failing to comply will result in a penalty being
incurred i.e. Docking of places and points!!
Drivers
Each driver is only permitted one car per meeting and each car is only permitted one
driver per meeting.
Racing Numbers
Racing numbers must be painted on BOTH sides of the car on a white panelled background,
number in black, minimum height of 16 x 2" wide brushstrokes. In addition a roof
plate must be fitted, no higher than 12" in total from roof, this must be painted
white with your racing number in black, minimum size 9" high by 1.5" strokes.
The Racing
The formula is designed to attract new drivers to oval racing, although others may take
part if they so wish providing they have not raced any formula on a regular basis for the
past five years. Competitors must be over sixteen years of age; anyone under 18 years of
age MUST have the written consent of their parent or guardian before competing.
There will be NO contact for the first three laps of any race, after which the Union Flag
will be shown and light contact will then be allowed as outlined in TYPE OF RACING. This
is a formula designed specifically for newcomers, novice drivers. Infringement of rules
will result in various penalties, which in some cases may mean immediate disqualification.
You must apply to race at least seven days prior to the meeting requested, enclosing your
entry fee. Entry forms available by post or from the Pit Office on Race days only.
